COURSE REQUISITES
The IIAR/Academy of Natural Refrigerants IIAR 2 Certificate Program is intended to provide education regarding standards outlining the safe and sustainable design of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Because the ANSI/IIAR 2 standard establishes minimum safe design criteria for closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems, this course is relevant for end users, facility managers, engineers, designers, design/build contractors, regulators, and PSM/safety specialists.
HOW IT WORKS
The IIAR 2 Certificate course includes eight training sessions, each approximately 45-60 minutes long, delivered as a PowerPoint presentation with lecture. At the end of each module there will be a short quiz to check learner comprehension of the material. After comprehension of material is demonstrated, you can move onto the next module. To receive a certificate, participants are required to pass a final course examination.
FINAL EXAMINATION
The sixty-question, multiple-choice final exam will take approximately two hours. It will be available online, as well as administered live at dates/locations TBD. Learners must achieve a minimum score of 80% (48/60 correct) to qualify for a certificate. Registrants MUST have paid their Certificate Course tuition and MUST have successfully completed the Module 1-8 Quick Check Quizzes (at least 80% correct on all eight quizzes) in order to sit for the final exam.
COURSE REQUISITES
IIAR recommends the following minimum requirements for individuals interested in participating in this program:
- General knowledge of the physical properties of ammonia;
- Familiarity with design and installation considerations affecting construction of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems;
- Working knowledge regarding equipment that may be employed in operational closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems.

Description
Module 1 - General
This module will review the introductory content of ANSI/IIAR 2-2014. This content includes the standard's purpose, scope and applicability for the safe design of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems along with key definitions not yet adopted intoANSI/IIAR 1-2012 Definitions and Terminology Used in IIAR Standards.It addresses recognized standards from other organizations.
Module 2 - Part 1 - Design and Installation Considerations Affecting Construction
The second Training Module to the ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 Certificate Program is the first of two presentations covering the design and installation considerations affecting construction. This first part dives into the general system design requirements for closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems and the location of ammonia refrigeration machinery through examination of the normative text covered in Chapters 4 and 5 as well as the explanatory material presented in Appendix A.
Module 3 - Part 2 - Design and Installation Considerations Affecting Construction
The third Training Module to the ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 Certificate Program is a continuation of the second training module covering the design and installation considerations affecting construction. What could be identified as the most important information in IIAR 2, this second part thoroughly investigates the requirements for machinery rooms. Additionally, the presentation begins to introduce information concerning refrigeration equipment located in areas other than machinery rooms which is a growing trend in the ammonia refrigeration industry through the introduction of packaged refrigeration systems.
Module 4 - Part 1 - Equipment
The fourth Training Module to the ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 Certificate Program is the first of three presentations looking into specifics of ammonia refrigeration equipment. This first part dives into the requirements for the various types of compressors, refrigerant pumps and condensers that are presented in Chapters 8, 9 and 10.
Module 5 - Part 2 - Equipment
The second of three presentations on ammonia refrigeration equipment, the fifth Training Module to the ANSI/IIAR2-2014 Certificate Program dives into the requirements for evaporators, pressure vessels and piping that are covered in Chapters 11, 12 and 13.
Module 6 - Part 3 - Equipment
The sixth Training Module to the ANSI/IIAR 2-2014 Certificate Program concludes the three-part series on ammonia refrigeration equipment educating the participant on the specific requirements for packaged system, overpressure protection devices, instrumentation and controls and ammonia detection and alarms. This presentation covers the information in Chapters 14, 15, 16 and 17.

Module 7 - Part 1 - Appendices
While the information is only informative, the seventh Training Module to the ANSI/IIAR2-2014 Certificate Program provides the participant with valuable insight and interpretation into the normative text covered in the main body of the standard by reviewing the significantly expanded content of the appendices. This is especially true with respect to the new format of Appendix A. In addition to the explanatory material in appendix A, this module reviews the characteristics and properties of ammonia, methods for calculating relief valve capacity for heat exchanger internal loads, pressure vessel duplicate nameplating, method for calculating discharge capacity of a positive displacement compressor pressure relief device, pipe hanger spacing, hanger rod sizing and loading, and hydrostatic overpressure relief.
Module 8 - Part 2 - Appendices
The last of the Training Modules to the ANSI/IIAR2-2014 Certificate Program presents the informative information in the remaining appendices including stress corrosion cracking, emergency pressure control systems, machine room signs, alternative ventilation calculation methods, pipe, fittings, flanges, bolting and operational containment.
