The purpose of this certificate course is to provide an intensive review of the ANSI/IIAR 2-2021 “American National Standard for Safe Design of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems,” and in the process expose learners to best practices in the proper design and safe operation of industrial refrigeration systems.
Because
the ANSI/IIAR 2 standard establishes minimum safe design criteria for
closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems, this course is relevant
for end users, facility managers, engineers, designers, design/build
contractors, regulators, and PSM/safety specialists.
Topics covered during the eight sessions include: system design requirements; machinery room requirements; electrical safety; ammonia detection and alarm; ventilation; signage; requirements for non-machinery room spaces; equipment; piping; and overpressure protection devices. Throughout the course curriculum, there is a focus on the connection between the design of a refrigeration system; appropriate inspection, testing, and maintenance tasks; and process safety management. The safety focus extends to persons and property located at or near the premises where refrigeration systems are located.
After participating in this activity, learners will be able to :
* Demonstrate the relationship between proper design of a closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration system and safe, efficient operation of that system
* Describe appropriate and safe location of ammonia refrigeration equipment and outline general design requirements for construction of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems
* Discuss design and installation considerations for machinery rooms and requirements for refrigeration equipment located in areas other than machinery rooms
* Understand safe installation and proper operation of equipment that may be employed in closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems, including compressors, refrigerant pumps, condensers, evaporators, pressure vessels, piping, packaged systems and equipment, overpressure protection devices, instrumentation and controls, and ammonia detectors and alarms
